REGION - Thirty-two Derry public employees earned more than $100,000 last year, with 22 making upwards of $110,000, according to a review of municipal and school employee salaries.
With approximately 25,000 residents, Londonderry had 21 town and school employees earning more than $100,000 last year.
Derry — the largest town examined, with an estimated population of 34,000
 — had more employees earning top-dollar wages last year, but the highest-paid employees between the two towns are from Londonderry.

Topping the list is Londonderry Town Manager David Caron, who made $134,253 in 2010, with an additional vehicle allowance of $6,450, according to Assistant Town Manager Susan Hickey, who earned $125,237 last year.
If former Derry Town Administrator Gary Stenhouse had stayed through the end of 2010, he would have earned $117,645, with a vehicle allowance of $3,600. Stenhouse left his post in October and was replaced by John Anderson, who will make $110,000 with a $4,200 vehicle allowance this year.
With a salary of $131,260, Londonderry Superintendent Nathan Greenberg comes in second in Londonderry.
Derry Superintendent Mary Ellen Hannon made $117,749 in 2010, the ninth-most in Derry.
Salem Superintendent Michael Delahanty made $120,500 in 2010, in a town of about 30,000 people. In Merrimack, with an estimated population of 26,000, school Superintendent Marjorie Chiafery made $129,012 last year.
While the biggest earners in Londonderry last year came from town and school administration, four out of five of Derry’s highest-paid employees work in the town’s fire department.
Topping Derry’s list is Battalion Chief David Hoffman, who grossed $130,283 last year, including $18,515 in overtime pay.
Derry Fire Chief George Klauber earned $123,980 last year, the fourth-highest wage in town.
In Londonderry, fire Chief Kevin MacCaffrie made $114,302 in 2010. Salem fire Chief Kevin Breen made $106,970 last year. In Merrimack, fire Chief Michael Currier made $93,117.
Police Chief Edward Garone made the second most in Derry last year, earning $130,185.
Londonderry police Chief William Hart made $107,386 last year. Merrimack police Chief Michael Milligan made $106,567. In Salem, police Chief Paul Donovan made $96,970 last year.
Having a mall, racetrack and amusement park in town means there are many opportunities for Salem police officers to rack up detail hours, Deputy Chief Shawn Patten said. Some officers were able to nearly double their pay by working details.
Patten earned more than $62,000 in detail pay last year, bumping his base salary of $89,224 to more than $151,000, making him the town’s highest paid employee.
Salem police Sgt. Marc Prescott earned $47,556 in private detail pay, which coupled with $39,206 in regular overtime also earned Prescott more than $150,000. Prescott’s base salary is $63,434.
Only two Derry police officers made more than $15,000 in private detail work in 2010, neither earning more than $25,000. Another eight Derry police officers earned more than $15,000 in overtime pay.
Ten Londonderry police officers each earned more than $15,000 in overtime last year, with five making more than $25,000. Six officers earned more than $15,000 on private details, with a single officer breaking $20,000 in detail pay.
Twenty-four Derry fire personnel made more than $15,000 in overtime pay in 2010, with 10 of those exceeding $20,000. In Londonderry, 12 fire department personnel earned more than $15,000 in overtime pay.
All school principals in Derry and Londonderry made more than $80,000 last year, with Londonderry High School Principal Jason Parent topping the list at $97,557.
In Londonderry, high school teacher Edward Burgess made $81,851 last year, including $12,700 in “other wages.” Superintendent Greenberg attributed that additional income to coaching stipends.
Derry’s highest paid teacher is library and media specialist Kathy Lane, who took home $75,554 in 2010. Superintendent Hannon said that Lane is paid more because she works a longer school year than other teachers.
At the other end of the scale, several teachers in both Derry and Londonderry made between $32,000 and $35,000 last year.
